ADVOCACY AND SPECIAL NEEDS
What advocacy hurdles have you had to overcome?
So this summer been very stressful for many reasons, but one thing that has been causing me a lot of anxiety and stress is Jonny’s education.
Our school district has been putting us through the ringer and Jonny’s school placement has been up in the air.
Jonny was so excited to get into this SPED school program that he wanted to skip his entire summer break just to start it.
Then, last month, the district rescinded his acceptance into the program, four months after they approved it.
😡😡😡
Friday, after weeks of blood, sweat, and tears, he was finally re-enrolled.
It took over a month of rigmarole and a 3,000 word appeal to the superintendent, but Jonny gets to stay in the program he is so excited to start.
I spent 2 weeks writing an appeal and I don’t know how many revisions I made, but it’s finally done… apparently what I had to say changed their minds… and Jonny gets to stay.
I never even told Jonny his acceptance was denied because it would have absolutely devastated him.
So he is happy. And he will never know there was ever even an issue with his enrollment.
Because there never SHOULD have been.
I thought I’d be more happy about it.
But I find I am just annoyed that we had to go through it in the first place.
But we went through something similar last year… and in years before. And we will probably go through something like this again in the future.
Because that is the life of a special needs scholar.
But Jonny is in. And that is a victory. And I will celebrate it, no matter how big or small.
